If you are looking for the best time to take maternity photos in Thunder Bay, you’ve likely realized that timing is everything. As a studio-based photographer with over 25 years of experience specializing in the expectant form, I’ve helped hundreds of local women document this fleeting season of life.
At my boutique studio here in Northwestern Ontario, I move away from the “over-the-top” and focus on a minimalist, elevated aesthetic. Whether you love a clean, light and airy look or a dramatic, moody set, my goal is to create timeless portraits that celebrate your strength.
The Best Week for Maternity Portraits
For most clients, the ideal time for a maternity session is between 28 and 34 weeks.
Why this “Sweet Spot” Matters:
- The Silhouette: By the 30-week mark, your bump is beautifully defined. This is essential for the minimalist silhouettes and maternity nudes I specialize in.
- Comfort in the Studio: You are still mobile enough to move through poses comfortably before the late-stage fatigue common in the final month.
- Northwestern Ontario Weather: Since my sessions are held in my climate-controlled Thunder Bay studio, we don’t have to worry about the outdoor temperature—but we do want to ensure we shoot before your baby’s arrival!
Note: For those expecting multiples, I recommend scheduling earlier, typically between 24 and 28 weeks.
The Studio Experience: Artistic & Intention-Driven
After two decades behind the lens, I’ve refined a style that is sophisticated and raw. I focus on the beauty of the human form, utilizing 25 years of lighting expertise to ensure you look and feel incredible.
A Curated Minimalist Wardrobe
There is no need to spend hours shopping for gowns. I provide a curated collection for my clients, including:
- Classic Bodysuits & Negligees: To emphasize the clean lines of your changing body.
- Artistic Fabrics: For timeless draping and movement.
- Simple Gowns: Selected for their minimalist appeal and “light and airy” feel.
Specializing in Maternity Nudes
I believe the pregnant form is a masterpiece of nature. I specialize in maternity nudes and offer this artistic style in every session. Using high-end lighting techniques, I create tasteful, fine-art portraits that highlight your glow. While this is a signature of my studio, it is always optional—your comfort is my priority.
Preparing for Your Thunder Bay Maternity Session
To achieve an elevated look, preparation is key. I guide my clients through every step, including:
- Professional H&MU: I provide guidance on hair and makeup to ensure it translates perfectly under my professional studio lights. We can provide recommendations for professionals to book before your session, but we also provide guidelines if you’re experienced in doing your own H&MU.
- Preparation Guide: You’ll receive a detailed list on how to prep your skin and what simple essentials to bring.
- Expert Posing: With 25+ years of experience, I will guide you down to your fingertips, making the process effortless for you.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Where is your studio located?
My private boutique studio is located on the edge of Thunder Bay, just off Lakeshore Drive, serving mothers from across the region.
When should I book my session?
I recommend reaching out during your second trimester to ensure a spot on my calendar during that 28–34 week window.
Do I need to bring my own outfits?
While you are welcome to bring personal items, most clients prefer to use my curated studio wardrobe of dresses, bodysuits and sheer materials to achieve my signature minimalist look. Though we do encourage clients to bring their pre-pregnancy jeans so we can include a casual “Calvin Klein-esque” set that’s easy to share with anyone!
