The first few weeks with a new baby are a blur of wonder, exhaustion, and tiny details. As a photographer with over 25 years of experience, I’ve found that many mothers share the same questions as they prepare to document this milestone.
My philosophy is rooted in a timeless, minimalist aesthetic. I believe that by stripping away the distractions—using a mostly white/neutral palette and simple styling—we can put all the emphasis on the baby and the profound connection of your growing family.
Here are the questions I hear most often from mothers planning their newborn portraits.
1. When is the best time for newborn portraits?
For those classic, sleepy portraits, the ideal window is typically between 5 and 14 days old. During this stage, babies are flexible and tend to sleep deeply through transitions.
However, because my style focuses on natural details and family connection rather than complex “prop posing,” we can still create beautiful images if your baby is a bit older.
We also appreciate that babies sometimes need a little more care and time before they’re discharged from the hospital. Rest assured, we can ALWAYS get beautiful images of your baby, no matter what!
2. When should I get on your calendar?
It is best to reach out during your second or early third trimester. Because I only take a limited number of sessions per month to ensure I can remain flexible for your actual delivery date, the calendar does fill up in advance. Booking early also allows you to lock in current pricing and spread your investment over a longer period.
3. What do we need to bring or wear?
In my studio, we keep things very simple to ensure the photos never feel dated. I provide a curated selection of soft wraps and simple outfits for the baby, though our style is rather minimalist, so we keep fussy outfits to a minimum. For parents and siblings, I recommend neutral tones that complement our white, airy aesthetic. The goal is for you to arrive and relax without feeling like you had to shop for an entire wardrobe.
4. Can the rest of the family be included?
Absolutely. While I love capturing the tiny miracle of a newborn, the connection between family members is where the story truly lives. Whether it’s a sibling’s first time holding their new best friend or a quiet moment between parents, these are the images that carry the most emotion years later.
I offer three distinct packages based on who you’d like to include in the session and how many digital files and prints you wish to walk away with.
5. How long does a session typically last?
Newborn sessions are unhurried. They usually take 1 to 3 hours (depending on the package), allowing plenty of time for nursing, diaper changes, and soothing. I follow the baby’s lead—there is never any rush. My studio is designed as a peaceful space where you can sit back and have a moment of quiet while I work. We even offer a coffee/tea bar for your convenience.
6. Is it safe to have my newborn posed?
Safety is the most important part of my job. Having been in business for 25 years, I have a deep understanding of newborn physiology. Beyond my photography experience, I bring my background as a nurse and a mother of two to every session. I handle every baby with the same care and medical awareness I would give my own.
Your Memories Belong in Your Hands
I believe your photos deserve a life outside of a digital screen. That’s why every collection includes complimentary fine-art prints. My goal is to provide a tangible legacy you can hold—not just a file on a drive.
