The “Wild & Wonderful” Years: Why You Shouldn’t Skip the Toddler Portraits

There is a common trend in family photography: parents are diligent about the Newborn session, the Sitter session, and the First Birthday. But then, something happens. The baby starts running, their proportions change, and suddenly, parents think, “We’ll wait until they can sit still and follow directions before we do photos again.”

As a photographer (and a nurse who has seen it all!), I’m here to tell you: Don’t wait.

The ages of 2, 3, and 4 are some of the most honest, soulful, and hilarious years of your child’s life. I am thrilled to introduce our new “Lively Littles” Milestone Sessions, specifically designed for this energetic, transitional age group.

1. Their Personality is “Full Volume”

At two, three, and four, children aren’t “posing” for the camera—they are simply being. This is the age of the “big” personality. Whether it’s a shy tuck of the chin, a burst of infectious laughter, or a focused brow as they explore the studio, these are the expressions you’ll want to remember twenty years from now.

2. The “Little Kid” Transformation

This is the stage where the “baby chubs” melts away and you start to see the person they are becoming. Those chubby baby wrists have leaned out, and they’ve found their footing. It’s also the season of that perfect, bright-white “milk tooth” smile—that beautiful, full set of teeth they’ll keep for a few more years before the gaps of kindergarten begin. Capturing this “in-proportion” stage is vital before they hit the lanky, fast-growing school years.

3. A Stress-Free Zone (The Nurse Factor)

I know what you’re thinking: “My toddler won’t sit still for 5 minutes, let alone a photo shoot!” Here is the secret: They don’t have to. My “Lively Littles” sessions are fast-paced and child-led. With 25 years of experience and a career in nursing, I’m used to working with “big emotions.” My studio is a safe, calm environment where we let your child move. We play, we laugh, and I capture the magic in the momentum.

4. Bridging the Gap to School Portraits

There is a massive physical change between a one-year-old and a five-year-old. If you skip these middle years, you miss the transition from “toddler” to “child.” The Lively Littles package ensures your family archives have the full story—not just the beginning and the middle.

Introducing: The “Lively Littles” Package

Designed specifically for the 2–4 age group, these sessions are:

  • Short & Sweet: 20-minute sessions to match their energy levels.
  • Movement-Based: No rigid posing; just guided play and natural interaction.
  • Heirloom Quality: Resulting in timeless, minimalist portraits that fit perfectly alongside your Newborn and Sitter galleries.

Don’t wait for “perfectly behaved.” Capture the “perfectly real” instead.
