Beyond “Cheese”: How to Master the Family Portrait part of your Session (Even with a Wild One!)

Toddler tantrum. Thunder Bay Family Photographer

Every parent knows the feeling: you’ve invested in a professional family photoshoot, dressed everyone beautifully, and then… your toddler decides it’s not their day. The pressure to get that “perfect” shot can turn a fun experience into a stress-filled hour.

As a photographer of over 25 years, I’ve learned that the most beautiful family portraits aren’t about perfectly posed children. They’re about capturing the authentic connection, the tiny quirks, and the undeniable love that makes your family uniquely yours—even (especially!) amidst the beautiful chaos.

Here are my top tips for a stress-free family session, designed to put both you and your little ones at ease:

1. Let Go of “Perfect” (Embrace Authentic!)

This is the biggest secret: there’s no such thing as a “perfect” child’s behavior during a photoshoot. Kids are kids! They squirm, they explore, they have strong opinions. Instead of striving for forced smiles and rigid poses, let your children lead. My approach is to capture genuine interactions—the tickle fights, the whispered secrets, the quick hugs. These are the moments you’ll cherish most, not the stiff, “say cheese” grimaces. Of course we aim to get at least something approximating the “perfect”, and sometimes my photoshop skills help by compositing (putting together) a few images to make one… but our aim is to capture your family and all your children’s personalities “where they’re at” on the day!

2. Trust Your Photographer (That’s Me!)

With 25+ years of experience, I’ve seen it all. I’ve handled meltdowns, unexpected wardrobe changes, and every toddler mood imaginable. As a former ICU nurse, my nurse’s calm demeanour means I’m unflappable. Your job is to simply engage with your children; my job is to anticipate those fleeting, beautiful moments and capture them. You don’t need to discipline or cajole—just trust that I’m working my magic. I so often tell my clients that I only need a quick “moment” here and there, not an entire hour of perfect behaviour!

3. Plan for Comfort, Not Conflict

Wardrobe battles can derail a session before it even starts. In our pre-session consultation, we’ll discuss outfits that are both appropriate and comfortable for your children. Let them have a small say in what they wear. Be that shoes or a favourite accessory. A happy child in a slightly imperfect outfit is always better than a miserable one in a perfectly coordinated, itchy ensemble! Again my photoshop skills can often assist in colour choices if your toddler insists on a neon skirt or t-shirt when everyone else is in neutral tones.

4. Pack Smart: Snacks, Sips, & Secrets

  • Hydration & Fuel: Bring water and small, non-messy snacks (think crackers, puffs, or dry cereal), and keep them a “secret” from your child, until it’s necessary to bring them out.
  • Rewards (The Secret Weapon): A small, non-edible treat (like a tiny toy car or a sticker) can be a fantastic incentive for a few minutes of cooperation.
  • Comfort Item: If your child has a favourite blanket or stuffed animal, bring it along! We can often incorporate it naturally, or it can be a source of comfort between shots.

5. Schedule Wisely (Especially for Littles)

If you’re preparing for a Newborn session, which is normally done in the morning (for optimal Newborn images), we work with what ever we can with your toddler. If it’s a maternity session, usually done in the early afternoon, we can schedule it after your toddler’s morning nap. If it’s a family or milestone session, we will work together to choose a session time that aligns with your child’s natural rhythm—ideally after a nap and a meal. A well-rested, well-fed child is always a happier participant.

Beyond the Chaos, Comes Connection

Remember, your family’s story is beautiful because it’s real. My minimalist approach focuses on the connection and emotion, not distractions. These are the portraits you will hold in your hands for decades, reminding you of the love (and laughter) that filled this precious stage.
